Sometimes
people say, "Hey, Brook + Debbie, You say you're a grass roots
organization, so how hands-on do you get?" Okay, so Robert Rodriquez,
the young after-school coordinator at Animo Watts CharterHigh School, had heard about the boxing program at our other site, Locke Tech, and decided to start his own. He had random headgear, two pairs of sketchy boxing gloves, but no mats, or cups or tape. Debbie and I put the gloves on to horse around. As we tried to knock each other out, my fingers burst through the palm of the glove. "What's up with that?" I said, and Debbie said, "How are they supposed to box with those? And no cups? Oy."
