Sometimes
people say, "Hey, Brook + Debbie, You say you're a grass roots
organization, so how hands-on do you get?" Okay, so Robert Rodriquez,
the young after-school coordinator at Animo Watts CharterHigh School, had heard about the boxing program at our other site, Locke Tech, and decided to start his own. He had random headgear, two pairs of sketchy boxing gloves, but no mats, or cups or tape. Debbie and I put the gloves on to horse around. As we tried to knock each other out, my fingers burst through the palm of the glove. "What's up with that?" I said, and Debbie said, "How are they supposed to box with those? And no cups? Oy." Sometimes
people say, "Hey, Brook + Debbie, Where does the money go? What do you
spend it on?" Here is an example of Brook + Debbie spending money. We
bought this necklace for Animo Watts Sophhomore, Marlin, as part of our
jewelry appreciation program. (kidding) Marlin is featured in "Man
Talk," a segment of the YA Watts Late Night show where he can relax and
give advice on any situation you ask him about. Pictured here L-R are
Comedy Instructor Jose Velasquez, Marlin, comedian, Martin Rizo, and of
course, Debbie. Marlin is on every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

go from our student teams in Watts to South L.A. and then cruise down
the Sunset Strip to catch YA faculty member Susanna Lee on stage at the
Comedy Store's storied Belly Room. Susanna is stationed at YA's Animo
Watts Charter High School. "If one of our artists is on stage, we'll be

Young
Angels Pac Pal team events support Young Angels of America after-school
programs at Animo Watts Charter High School, Locke Tech High School,
Watts Labor Community Action Committee and Grace Temple Baptist Church.
We are a not-for-profit organization that teaches entrepreneurial fund
raising and event production to middle and high school students. This
event is supporting L.A.'s Prom Closet as well as the ongoing cost of
our faculty, guest artists, equipment (including flip cams, microphones,
amplifiers, laptops, Kindles), transportation (getting the teams
together), production, workshops (including DJ, Security, Dress for
Success), materials, special projects such as the Animo Watts Prom
Project and the YA Watts Comedy Project. For more information, contact

RIDE ALONG WITH BROOK + DEBBIE
If you want to check out one of the coolest after-school programs in L.A., book a ride-along. We
take passengers on Wednesdays for a full day of fun. We start at 11
a.m. with our Leadership Class at Animo Watts H.S., followed by the best
cafeteria food and the hottest YA student store ever, then observe "The
Great Gatsby" in Junior English. At 3 p.m., it's our YA Watts Comedy
Team with Jose Velasquez, Martin Rizo + Susanna Lee. We zoom back up
the freeway and end the day at 6 p.m. with chips and dip and our
Palisades production team who help finance the whole deal. Thursdays we
ride to Locke Tech H.S. for "LATE NIGHT AT LOCKE" with Reggie Brown +

was a fund raiser for the AWCHS Senior Prom. If you would like to
donate, the team is $6,000 away from goal. Young Angels Donate.
