Rick Malambri, star of Step Up 3D was the special guest at FIRE, the first event of the YA season.  He arrived
alone, without an entourage, and was very generous with his time.  He stood for countless photos, and was
interviewed for an upcoming YA video on young celebrities and their  high school community service.  He hung
out in the kitchen and helped sell Pinkberry.  He also enjoyed a cupcake from Southern Girl Deserts.  Best of
all, Rick said he would be happy to come and visit the new competition dance team "TAKE IT BACK", that YA
is sponsoring and teaching at Horace Mann Middle School.

President of YA - AJR -

Wins D.J. Scholarship to Camp Spin-Off

President of YA-Animo Jackie Robinson Team wins full scholarship to D.J. Camp
Edgar Aguirre, Pres. of YA Animo Jackie Robinson at D.J. Camp

Edgar at D.J. Camp
Edgar Aguirre was awarded a full scholarship to attend Camp Spin-Off in Ojai, California.  The scholarship was awarded by Young Angels and was made possible by a gift from Scratch Academy, Los Angeles.
The following is a letter from Edgar, while he was at camp.

Hola Brook and Debbie,

Well CampSpin off has been such an amazing opportunity.  I made so many friends while learning a new aspect of music I was honestly ignorant in. CampSpin Off - Where DJs go to play-- well for me it was Camp Spin Off where I learned to DJ. I had so much fun learning how to scratch, and now I just wanna learn more, I find myself listening to every sound every song and air scratching, my friends now make fun of me when I air scratch but I laugh and keep "scratching". I listen to music with new ears, and think about it differently, can't wait till I get to own my own turntable and start getting some experience. I still keep in contact with a lot of the campers, I remember the day before we had to leave we were all sad and happy we didnt want to leave. Then on Thursday when the day came a lot of us said our goodbyes, traded contact information, the girls cried and the boys pretended to be "men" and tried so hard not to cy, I just waited till I got home to cry. The counselors were the best, DJ Tina T, Morse Code, Evil One, Lady Sha, DJ Hapa and 4tify taught me a lot.  Cristian Montalvo who helped me a lot with my logo, and never will I forget him and Serafin who helped me and my group to create mashups and some killer sounds. Camp Spin Off was the best experience I have had. I always look for new experiences and this one will be one I tried and will grow from. Thank you Brook and Debbie and Young Angels for the chance of a life time.  Thank you Camp Spin Off and all the counselors and sponsors, plus all the campers for all the memories. Can't wait to go back!

Love, Edgar

Are you on a team?  Is your kid on a team?  It's the best, right?  This event is supporting the YA DJ Tech Program and our new Competition Dance Team at Horace Mann Middle School.   It costs $7.50 a day for one student to dance.  Mr. Hassan Christopher is a great teacher, and it's our project to keep him at this school and share him with some other schools too.  If you can kick in even a little, that will help us get the shirts, and the jackets (gotta have the jackets), and the travel-- that would make us sooooo happy.  Check this out:  www.crowdrise.com/FRESH

Chance Dance with Lucy Hale Funds YA Dance Team
Dance Team Announces "Pretty Girl Swag" as first number to go to rehearsal.

Co-President TaiwanYA
YA Horace Mann Dance Team Co-Presidents Alicia (L) and Taiwan (R) prepare for September dance team auditions.

TAKE IT BACK.  YA DANCE & FILM TEAM LAUNCHES. Thanks to the Lucy Hale "Chance" Dance and everyone who attended, Young Angels is able to fund the brand new YA competition dance team at Horace Mann Middle School.  Because of you, 20 middle school students will have dance instruction 2x a week, at no cost to the school or to them.  Because you come to YA events, we are able to hire Mr. Hassan Christopher, who teaches dance at UCLA, to be the dance faculty.  The team will take two classes a week on campus and pracitice an additional 3 days after school.  The first number to go into rehearsal is "Pretty Girl Swag".  The team will also learn to fundraise the YA way to pay for a few extras with a holiday production of "Dancing with the Faculty".  For their "capture project," they will be making flip videos as the team progresses. The program costs $15 per week per dancer, which isn't much when you think about how expensive many after-school programs are.  Every $20 ticket you bought to "Chance" and will buy to "Fire" pays for one dancer per week, as well as supporting the other YA  after-school programs.  We are proud of you for coming out to YA events and making all this possible.

Dance teacher, Mr. Hassan Christopher, signs on for after-school dance team. He comes to YA via NYU and UCLA, where he is currently on the dance faculty.

ALUM NEWS - VANESSA VALLON, NYU, TO

HONDURAS WITH MEDICAL BRIGADE

Vanessa Vallon, Circa 2006
Vanesa Vallon, circa 2006,
doing check-in at Young Angels Dance
Dear Young Angels Palisades,
I hope you are all well! I hear you are doing great work in L.A. Good luck with your music festival.  It's good you're making such a difference on the local level. My years as a YA gave me a lot of practice for what I'm doing at the end of the summer. I am going to Honduras with the NYU chapter of Global Medical Brigades, a student-run global health and sustainable development organization that establishes sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to healthcare. The current emphasis is in Central America , where sustainable health care is provided to more than 40 villages. With 75 chapters at universities in the U.S. and Canada, more than 3,000 student volunteers and health professionals have traveled to establish mobile clinics in under resourced communities. The NYU chapter will be serving the community near Nuevo Paraiso , Honduras . Honduras is a small country in Central America , approximately the size of Tennessee , with a population upwards of 6.7 million people. It's the second poorest country in Latin America ; an estimated 80% of the population lives in poverty. The unemployment rate soars at 35% and the average annual per capita income is just under $1000 per year. Education, health care and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where GMB works, they are even scarcer. Poverty here results in preventable deaths, malnutrition and thousands of abandoned children living on the streets.

By providing medical brigades every 6 months in these communities, the NYU chapter provides a model for sustainable health care in underserved villages. Along with doctors and other health professionals, we conduct preliminary needs assessment, treat patients to the highest ethical standards, sponsor referrals to those with needs beyond our capability, record data for the production of quantitative reports, and work to improve the water, sanitation, and economic infrastructures.

In order to make this brigade a success, each student is responsible for fundraising in order to meet the fees of the necessary medications and materials. I could really use your help! To donate, simply click this link and follow the instructions:

Even if you can't contribute, I am glad you had a chance to read about what I'm doing.  Keep up the great work you're doing in L.A. and bring your YA spirit with you to college. With love, Vanessa Vallon

The Young Angels Festival, Aug. 29, 2010, 1-5 PM, is an all ages Pacific Palisades community event that brings together families and friends to enjoy an afternoon of bands, dancing, great food trucks, and arts and crafts. Proceeds will support Young Angels after-school programs in South Los Angeles.

The bandstand and dance floor at the corner of Sunset and Temescal, will showcase local bands, guest artists from Animo Jackie Robinson High School, and the classic rock and roll of the Weasels. The Good Food Truck Stop and food tent will include a grilled cheese truck, a bbq truck and Southern Girl Deserts. An "Arts & Crash" area will include Nagoya Flava, artist Nori Shirasu, who will paint the Y's meadow shed with Festival guests, and a climbing wall. The YMCA will have a soccer demonstration, and Scratch D.J. academy will be providing a scratch 'n learn station. There will be a princesses twirling party, glitter tattoos, cupcake decorating and Captain K will teach pirate sword techniques.

Senior student producer, Rachel Jaffe says, "The Palisades is our community, but L.A. is our city, and the opportunities we have in the Palisades are far greater than those in other parts of town. This event is a chance for us to share what we have here with other schools."

Student production teams from the Palisades, Watts and South L.A.

have produced six dance events in the Palisades, two dances at Animo Watts Charter High School, a talent show at Animo Jackie Robinson High School, a student store and a talk show in Watts over the past year. This festival is the culmination of their Senior Producers Project.
